The Local Area
Despite the varying characteristics of the landscape of southern Crete, the network of roads in the area is fairly good for exploring. A journey into the mountain area may reveal babbling streams and small waterfalls, rocky outcrops, steep gorges, wild orchids growing in crevices and spectacular views. In the other direction you may find deserted beaches, paths through olive fields or over headlands revealing wild herbs like oregano, thyme and sage, flocks of Greenfinches or an occasional crested lark. At night time, due to the lack of light pollution, the heavens are filled with thousands of stars, a must for the amateur astronomer. These and more await the walker or nature lover.
Kamilari is only 2 miles from the beach at Kalamaki. Other small villages in the area are, Pitsidia, Matala, Sivas, Listaros, Kouses, Vori and Agia Galini. Beaches in the area are, Klamaki, Komos, Matala, Red Beach, Kali Limenes, Kataliki Kokinos Pirgos and Agia Galini.
